Artists were asked to look into the past. I
looked to the Victorian era of pomp and parlor. I was interested in the formal
presentation
of grandeur, wealth and perfection that the period exemplified -- but
through the eyes of today's aesthetic value system. The sentiment,
though communicated differently, is not that disparate -- conspicuous
consumption -- wanting to appear lavish. However the mode of representation
is purely a reflection of our current consumer culture -- the lack
of investment given to craft and art -- the prevalence of stores like
Target, Walgreens , Kmart etc. -- go go go -- speed -- lots with little.
I Xerox transferred beautiful botanical drawings (executed during the
Victorian era) onto moleskin and used cheap gold frames against a lovely
mint green wall. The effect achieved was just that -- a beautiful little
setting with hardly any money or time invested -- a very Martha Stewart
approach to the home décor of the 1990's. |
